In 2012, I supported CARE International's "Community Infrastructure Improvement Project" (CIIP) in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab in Pakistan. Under this CIDA-funded project, 3,750 destitute women are working on rural road maintenance. With their savings and various trainings received under this project, they are investing in small businesses, ensuring the sustainability of this action.
I was amazed by the power of these women. In Sindh, Muslim and Hindu communities are working together, sometimes for the first time ever. Against common prejudices about the role and life of women in Pakistan, my photographs of this visit document that positive change and women empowerment is a possibility, and not only in Pakistan.
