In 2016, I represented NRC as Country Director in Iraq, where I witnessed the military campaign to retake Mosul from the Islamic State Group. The humanitarian consequences were massive. More than 5 million people were forced to leave their homes during this conflict. In 2018, over 2 million people were still unable to return home.
